To really really cry. It’s ok, I consoled, I will buy you the dvd. It’s not lost, not gone forever. We can get it back. We can watch it again, as many times as you want, I said, pressing her to me. Her heart beat faster than mine and I could feel it changing my rhythm. Saltwater tears and snot flowed from her face into my hair, nourishing me with the same primal fluids that brought her into being in the first place. NO NO NO she cried plaintively, body to body, with the fluid meld we had five minutes into the tearful embrace. In a terrible rush, I suddenly got it that she had just experienced for the first time a total absorption into a fictional world that then permanently disappeared. In a shock. The time was done & gone forever. Irretrievably lost. She was repatriating back into reality. It was a rough journey. I was useless. She *knew* I was useless. At least at this. Not even I could resuscitate lost time by repeating a lost joy. I remembered Anne Sexton’s poem Pain for a Daughter. Her daughter was stepped on by a horse. Her foot was fucked the hell up. The pain was terrible. While tending the wound, Sexton wrote that she made eye contact with her daughter. In that moment, "I saw her in her own death. And I knew that she knew.” Oedipa is a writer and activist living in New York City. This Drunk CatReposted By Liz White.
