By Oedipa Maas I stripped to this (Pussy Tourette - French Bitch) . A lot. It was in my regular cd rotation. At the Mitchell brothers. So did a bunch of other “hipster” strippers I still know & love, who may want to remain anonymous about that. Anyway. I miss the solidarity between sex workers & LGBTQ (oh yeah there was crossover, big time…) San Francisco in the late 90s…who could have foreseen the hell it would become shortly thereafter? I think the only embarrassing things—besides silly French rap—was concessions to our largely boomer audience. Like, Mike Monaghan loved Pink Floyd, so I danced to Young Lust. And a set with both versions of Layla (original & acoustic). Then Jimi Hendrix star Spangled banner on 4th of July…
I was amazed by women doing things I could def not do. Just awed. Like <redacted> dancing to Iron Man. <redacted> dancing to the rilly long Pink Floyd songs. <redacted> dancing to nine inch nails…MB was full of some seriously drop dead gorgeous pros who could pull off so much impossible, the other pros watched in awe, ferreal. I danced to “Cream” by Prince enough in a white satin stretchy slip dress & fake pearls no one else would use it on same shift as me. But darling Nikki was always up for grabs by anyone—first come first served. (For you civilians—PRINCE is the KING of strip club set lists..❤️🔥) Oedipa is a writer and activist living in New York City.
