Hidden FiguresBy Jeff Campbell 2/6/2022 John Glenn’s space flight took place in 1962. The film Hidden Figures, the story of three brilliant Black Women that helped him get to space was released in 2017. This is one glaring example of why Black History Month exists. How many young Black girls would've been inspired to work hard in math or to pursue a career in aeronautical engineering, if the story of those three had been celebrated and elevated in the same way as John Glenn’s story? Treading WaterReposted by L. George Friday. During a study at Johns Hopkins in the 1950s, Dr. Curt Richter placed rats in a pool of water to test how long they could tread water. On average they'd give up and sink after 15 minutes. But right before they gave up due to exhaustion, the researchers would pluck them out, dry them off, let them rest for a few minutes - and put them back in for a second round. In this second try - how long do you think they lasted? Remember - they had just swam until failure only a few short minutes ago... How long do you think? Another 15 minutes? 10 minutes? 5 minutes? No! 60 hours! That's not an error. That's right! 60 hours of swimming. The conclusion drawn was that since the rats BELIEVED that they would eventually be rescued, they could push their bodies way past what they previously thought impossible. I will leave you with this thought: If hope can cause exhausted rats to swim for that long, what could a belief in yourself and your abilities, do for you? Remember what you’re capable of. Remember why you’re here. Keep swimming. Original post by Russel Bryant. L. The Shark in the Fish Tankby Jeff Campbell 11/8/2021 A shark, in a fish tank will grow 8 inches. A shark in the ocean will grow 8 feet or more. The shark will never out grow it's environment. People are the same way. An environment that reinforces the generalizations, stereotypes and profiling by the master narrative, along with people who have not addressed trauma for generations, will compound, prolong and perpetuate the behaviors associated with that trauma. Is the hood our fish tank? Is our circle of friends? Our echo chamber? Our bubble? What's our potential if we dare to climb out into the ocean? Wales eat sharks, so it's much safer in the fish tank, but in the ocean, there's much to gain by being brave enough to encounter the wales. Are we willing to be brave? Willing to accept the responsibility that comes with living to our greatest potential, no matter how many wales we may encounter? Jeff Campbell is the founder of the Emancipation Theater Company. Fellow White Humans by Shawn Simons 6/4/2020 Fellow white humans. Be prepared to step in shit. It is ok. Even the greatest ally amongst us does not know what it is like to be black in America. We can participate against the racially rigged system one day and then go have a latte the next without giving it another thought. That is the privilege of being white. I was called out by a black friend the other day about one of my posts. I had meant it to be supportive but for them it was insensitive. When I read their comment I had to push down my defenses. My impulse, like many, was to list all the great ways I am, and have been, an ally. My impulse was to explain to them all the ways they misunderstood my post. Those were my impulses. The reality was that she was right. The reality is that it is uncomfortable to be called out when you feel like you are one of the good guys. But we cannot be afraid to speak up. However, when we do speak we must be prepared to listen. We need to be ready to digest the information and then take a real look at ourselves. We are not going to always get it right - but we cannot be quiet. We need these honest reflections of ourselves to come to a deeper understanding. To grow and to be what it is we wanted to be in the first place, to be a good ally. Shawn Simons recently left the organization she founded, the Kitty Bungalow Charm School, to forge agricultural bliss in a former eastern block nation with her husband Kyle. Her only regret in life is not getting to play Mattie Ross in the remake of the movie True Grit. Please send feedback, suggestions for improvements, and social media hacks to [email protected].

I love you Shawn Simons. We can play True Grit Albania Edition anytime. My only fear in wearing an eye patch is that I’ll start talking like a pirate.
