When Erica Vagrom started exploring the workflow of creating a podcast, she had no idea that the experiment would eventually draw in over 17 million global listeners. The inspiration for Vagrom Eclectic came while Erica was giving disinterested climate youth activists a tour of Denver's public access radio station. "They were like, 'what is radio?' I mean, they understood the importance of being able to get your message out past corporate media gatekeepers," Erica said. "But I realized that legacy media just didn't hold a candle to what they're getting from their phones."
Erica found a free website platform in Weebly (now owned by Square), and started producing shows. Each episode features work from new and emerging independent artists, creating a distinctive mellow vibe. "Music has always been my rock," said Erica, "and I was able to explore lots of new tracks while trying to work out any kinks that these climate youth might encounter." The podcast's 18 episodes are hosted by Erin Gleeks, who met Erica just after a bad run in with management at Denver Open Media. "She was not having any of that bullsh*t with those arrogant straight white guys," says Gleeks. Later, over cocktails served in Gleeks' converted step van, the two developed a bond. "When Erica told me all the stuff she was working on, I told her I was all in." Gleeks has a decades-long track record in community radio, and recently relocated from the Bay Area. "I knew we had a good thing going when Erica started sending me audio files," said Gleeks, "but I never imagined it would catch on like this." Vagrom Eclectic is available on the original Weebly site, on Messy.com/Vagrom, Apple, Google, and Spotify. Chance Stoney Stoney is a Denver-based independent blogger specializing in discovering new "micro-media" fare.
